Today the 'Seabird Technical Group' came together to have their annual meeting to continue to safeguard Scilly's seabirds.
Today the project staff and Isles of Scilly Wildife team and volunteers carried out a full beach clean of St Agnes and Gugh. We collected over 50 rubbish bags of rubbish and other larger items including nets and plastic. Thanks to the Council of the the Isles of Scilly for supporting the costs of picking up the rubbish and disposing off it back on St Mary's.
Each Friday, a Guide onboard the Scillonian III points out the wildife from the boat. This week there were many bird watchers onboard all keen to see some good seabirds, they werent disappointed!
Today the project delivered 'Apple Day' on St Agnes. The children collected wind-fallen apples to remove them off the ground, thereby removing a food source from any potential rats if an incursion occurs. They juiced the apples (thanks to Mike Hicks, 28 miles) as part of a healthy snack and made bird feeders.
We are very glad that the wheelie bins and 'Green Joannas' from the project continue to assist the community in managing their waste - a task they have been successfully achieving over the years - but as we all know, we need to ensure waste remains at a minimum, so if a rat does return, there is limited food for them to eat!
Thanks to everyone who came along to the Turks Head last night to hear about the next phase of the project
Today all 11 students at St Martins school took part in a seabird activity.
Each Friday, a wildlife Guide points out wildlife to passengers onboard the boat. This week there were plenty of gannets and even Bottlenose dolphins. Skuas, Med gulls, shearwaters.....
The project joind St Mary's Youth Hub on an evening wildlife adventure looking for nocturnal wildlife such as Manx shearwaters, shrews and moths!
