Overall the number of seabirds breeding within the Isles of Scilly archipelago has decreased by almost 10% in the last 9 years, and this rapid rate of loss likely represents a wider issue with the health of our oceans.

Storm Petrel nesting boxes are currently being made in the RSPB Penzance office. Thanks to Assistant Warden Phil Catton and the wonderful volunteers. In 2013 they made the baiting tunnels for the project and they are back to assist us again! 

Today we said goodbye and thank you to Biz Bell, Alex Cropper, Lindsey Death, Rob Farrington and Sarah Havery, as the 'final check for rats phase' came to an end. Thanks so much for all your work for the past three years and come back to see the Manx shearwaters and the result of the project. 

Last night at 6pm Councillor Richard McCarthy announced St Agnes and Gugh officially 'rat-free'! 

We are delighted to announce as of 6pm Friday 12th February 2016 this important milestone of the project. The community and project team have done it, we are officially 'rat-free' and the seabirds will continue to benefit from no rats on St Agnes and Gugh.

Time off 

This week is the final week of monirtoring checks, and in order to detect any 'fussy rats' they have been given a choice of different flavoured  wax.

Today was an action filled day of showacasing worldwide projects, seabird songs and shrew card bunting!

Biz Bell and Alex Cropper (WMIL), Jo and Iain (volunteers) has arrived to carry out the important 'final check' for rats!

St Agnes School must be the only school in the UK which carries out biosecurity checks, checking permanent monitoring stations for signs of returning rats!

Today the children took Jaclyn, Lydia and volunteer Susie to check the stations with them and we then took the outdoors back into the classroom to create willow fish, Christmas stars ahead of the festive season, and then the finale was a huge group star-fish displayed at the school! 

During 'Date with Nature in September 2015' Local Community radio presenter Viv Benson interviewed Jaclyn Pearson about the project. Today the show aired on BBC Wiltshire, Gloucestershire, Somerset and Bristol.
