An early start at 0830hrs on Friday 15 May aboard the Scillonian III from Penzance in balmy conditions soon produced two basking sharks and good numbers of Manx Shearwater - with the majority heading westward. Auks were in evidence and a reduced numbers of Gannets - presumably this later species were attending nesting sites at Grassholm off the Pembrokeshire coast or Sept Isles on the French coast. Visibility was good with some glare in the bright sunshine plus a residual south-westerly swell making for some interesting ship movements at times.
Barrel Jellyfish were present during the crossing with about forty individual being observed by a group of environmental students who were on board. Also, the bony skeletal remains of cuttlefish were noted throughout the trip. There were two sightings of Harbour Porpoise both between Penzance and Wolf Rock.
The return journey to Penzance produced approximately 450 Manx Shearwater, mainly is the Runnel Stone to Penzance area.
