Today we welcomed Italians Giovanna, Massimo (Olbia Municipality/Tavolara Marine Protected Area) and Paolo, (associated beneficiary NEMO Ltd) to the islands. They are carrying out a LIFE Project “Protection of main world's population of Puffinus yelkouan and eradication of invasive alien species" . The main part of the project is to remove the rats from Tavolara Island (600 ha), north coast Sardina, which hosts 50% of the P. yelkouan global population. They particularly wanted to learn about the biosecurity measures we have implemented.
As part of their visit we have had an action packed first day with visits to the permanent monitoring stations, the recent surveilllence grid, the Manx shearwaters burrows, speaking to members of the community , project partners Isles of Scilly Wildlife Trust Rangers and project volunteers.
