The Council of the Isles of Scilly Extended schools holiday club today joined the project, taking a field trip to St Agnes and Gugh. The most exciting part of the day was hearing two Manx shearwater chicks calling back from their burrows on Gugh - these are the first birds recorded back on their burrows on Gugh this year - woohoo!

Other activities of the day were;

  •  a seabird and land bird survey - we recorded 20 different species!
  • viewing the kittiwakes making their nests
  • crossing Gugh sand bar and looking what footprints we could find - we also found a dead stranded common dolphin, although upsetting, we learnt how the 'stranding network' can be contacted and what we should do if we find live stranding.
  • learning about storm petrels on Annet
  • an Easter bunny-egg hunt! The young people had to use team working skills just as project staff do when they carry out rabbit surveys
  • ice cream from Troytown farm! (it was tasting activity, supporting local businesses!)

Feedback from the day included

‘I had a great time learning about the seabirds and the project’

‘I really enjoyed hearing the Manx shearwater calling back from the burrow’

‘I will help seabirds by calling the number if I see anything ratty on St Agnes and Gugh’

‘seabirds are cool, I really like the kittiwakes too’
